The Euganean Hills
The Euganean Hills, a group of mountain reliefs of volcanic origin, arise, on the central Venetian plain, a few kilometers southwest from Padua, almost unexpectedly and isolated, as if they were, almost, an archipelago.
The English geologist John Strange, in fact, around 1770, defined them just like this: “they arise isolated, like rocks in the sea”.
From any direction you arrive, in fact, these hills amaze for their sudden “rise”, on the “sea” of the Po Valley, with their particular geometric profile: the hills, almost perfectly conical, have isolated peaks, alternating with gently rounded slopes.
The unmistakable geometry of the landscape, with the conical shape that refers to the antiquity of the volcanic origins, to the eruptions of 40 million years ago, the uniqueness of the natural environments, but also the richness of the artistic, historical and cultural heritage make the Euganean Hills a place to visit in its entirety.
Here, you will find enchanting corners of unspoiled nature and a precious biodiversity heritage; in fact, on the Euganean Hills, the first Regional Park of the Veneto region was born and there are numerous sites of naturalistic interest, in which more than 1400 botanical species are concentrated.
Among woods, hills, vineyards, olive groves, the heritage of the Euganean Hills is enriched with monuments such as Villas, Castles, Abbeys and historic villages.
Immersed in the Euganean Hills, a district of 15 municipalities, stands out: 15 wonderful villages, in which nature and history meet, among which: Arqua’ Petrarca, Lozzo Atestino, Abano Terme and Monselice.
The Euganean Hills, for their beauty, have also inspired important writers, poets and artists, the likes of Petrarch and Foscolo, who, over time, have left, in these places, works of inestimable value.
Moreover, the Euganean Hills also offer the opportunity to take food and wine tours, tasting the best wine excellences and local culinary specialties.
The Wines of the Colli Euganei
The Euganean Hills are famous for the production of excellent wine and, in fact, are placed in a territory between the 40th and 50th parallel, near the 45th, defined the “parallel of the wine”, for the equidistance both from the North Pole and the Equator, in an area that acts as a watershed, therefore, between the too cold of the North and the too hot of the South.
Due to the favorable climate and the particular morphology of the place, they produce wines with an inebriating fragrance and an unmistakable flavor.
The numerous wineries of the Euganean Hills give life to excellent wines, including many labels with prestigious awards and certified denominations.
Among the excellences, the Fior d’Arancio D.O.C.G. of the Euganean Hills (conquered in 2010), the jewel in the crown of Euganean wine production. But the range of white and red wines is truly vast and can amaze even the most demanding wine connoisseurs.
Rosso dei Colli Euganei, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Raboso, Marzemino, Corbinello and Novello, and then, Bianco dei Colli Euganei, Moscato, Serprino, Pinot Bianco, Chardonnay, Tocai Italico, Garganega, Glera, Chardonnay, Manzoni bianco, Pinella, Carmèner, Moscato bianco, Moscato giallo, to name a few of the excellences of this territory.
Touring the wineries with a cook and a sommelier
In the Euganean Hills the vineyards gently degrade on the hills to the edge of the woods: producing wine has always been an art, supported by the favorable nature, the morphology of the vines and the climatic factors.
Here the natural reality that is handed down and the advanced technology that is constantly renewed, give life to the wines guaranteed by the Consortium for the Protection of Wines of the Euganean Hills.
Along the Euganean Hills Wine Route you can stroll through the vineyards and chat with the winemakers to get some information about the winemaking: welcomed in the cellar you will discover the secrets of the wine production and then dedicate yourself to tasting it, rediscovering the aromas and flavors of the vineyard in the glass.
And in each winery, as well as tasting a range of local wines, you will be savouring a speciality prepared by your own Venetian cook to match the wines you will be drinking on.
After a quick visit to a local castle and the vineyards, at the first winery you will be served a selection of Cicchetti, the typical Venetian aperitif style snacks paired with a selection of white wines.
At the second winery, after a stroll through the vineyard and the cellar, you will sample a selection of three wines and then you will be delighted by a lovely risotto, prepared with season and local ingredients paired with an award winning red wine.
In the third winery you will taste a delicious local dessert, matched by a selection of local dessert wines.
The producers will introduce you to the world of wine tasting: you will use your sight, smell, taste and we will help you pairing it all with food, giving you some suggestions to make a good impression with friends once you go back home.
The Euganean hills are an area of Italy where the food and wine tradition is combined with the gentle hilly landscape. Here, you can spend moments of tranquility, tasting fine wines, exquisite local products and dishes prepared with care according to ancient local recipes.
